Amit Shah Urges Women To Stop Using Plastic Bags To Save Environment

AHMEDABAD: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday appealed to women not to use plastic bags to help protect the environment and suggested that they carry cloth bags, which are long-lasting, for shopping. Mr Shah said though the women may look somewhat "old fashioned" carrying the cloth bags, but such an initiative would help in saving the earth from plastic pollution. He said the Centre was also considering strong steps to stop the production of 'single-use' plastic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a resolve of Swachh Bharat (clean India). But, plastic is the "biggest hindrance" in realising that vision, he said addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad. "That is why our PM, in his Independence Day speech, urged the citizens to take up a movement against plastic from October 2 (Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary)," Shah said. Morning Digest: Officials say 36 suffered pellet injuries in Kashmir since August 5

Pellet guns were used by security personnel during protests, admits J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik. As many as 36 persons have received pellet injuries in the Kashmir Valley since August 5, a senior government official told The Hindu. The official said the numbers were based on records available with hospital authorities in Srinagar. The data from other districts in Valley was not available. On Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik admitted that pellet guns were used by security personnel during protests in the Kashmir Valley but they took utmost precaution to prevent injuries. “Its our achievement that there has been no civilian casualty so far. There were allegations that we are concealing the number of deaths but on the contrary we are sharing information even on pellet injuries. Barring one case, all pellet injuries were below the waist, only one person was hit in the neck, he is also fine and out of danger now,” Mr. Malik said in Srinagar.
